Fun thinngs to do

Reichstag

The Reichstag - the seat of the German Parliament, is one of Berlin's most historical landmarks. It symbolically encapsulates Berlin's turbulent history and recent revival. Right on the border between East and West Berlin at the Pariser Platz, the Brandenburger Gate was the symbol of the city's divide.

Checkpoint Charlie (Mauermuseum Haus)

Checkpoint Charlie is one of the ultimate symbols of the Cold War, epitomizing the separation between east and west Germany. For nearly 30 years, this checkpoint represented not only a divided Germany but a world in political turmoil...

Brandenburger Tor

Since the fall of the wall, the Brandenburger Gate has become the symbol of a reunified Berlin. The desolate area that Pariser Platz was during the cold war is now completely redeveloped and has regained much of its 19th century grandeur.

The Schloss Charlottenburg

Early 18th century baroque palace in Berlin's Charlottenburg district. The Charlottenburg palace is the largest palace in Berlin. It was built in several stages. The original, central part was constructed between 1695 and 1699. It was intended as the summer home for Sophie Charlotte, Elector Frederick III's wife.

Alexanderplatz

Formerly one of the most important squares in the city, it was destroyed in WW2 and has benefited from Berlins embracing of the new and daringly contemporary. So you'll find one of Europe's tallest structures; the 205m Fernsehturm - (or the toothpick tower, as the locals call it) and 'the World Clock' which tells the time anywhere on Earth...

Tiergarten Park & Berlin Zoo

The 2.5 sq. km Tiergarten is the largest park in the city. Its more than 23 km of pathways make it popular for those in the group who are looking for a leisurely place to stroll and chill out. The park is still home to the Berlin Zoo... (yes that is why we have a photo of a Hippo!)... resident animals - numbering about 13,000 in all enjoying life in one of the best natural open zoo habitats anywhere...

Holocaust Memorial

Designed to commemorate the murder of six million European Jews at the hands of Hitler and his forces, the Holocaust Memorial is made up of 2,711 gray stone slabs that bear no markings, such as names or dates. Definitely worth a visit to pay your respects...

The slabs undulate in a wave-like pattern. Each is a five-sided monolith, individually unique in shape and size. Some are only ankle high while others tower over visitors. Eisenman (architect) hoped to create a feeling of groundlessness and instability; a sense of disorientation. Most will agree that he succeeded. Visitors may walk through the memorial in any direction as there is no set pattern to the stones. The architect has said that he hopes it will merely become a natural part of the city. The Holocaust Memorial can be visited at anytime night or day.

Shopping

There are countless places in Berlin for shopping sprees: wickedly expensive temples of consumption, flea markets and antique markets, cheap bargain stores and the whole spectrum in between. The city offers clothing of all varieties, from up-market to cheap: luxury designers are based at the west end of Kurfrstendamm and in Friedrichstrasse.

Nightlife

Berlin has what policemen call ‘previous’ in this department: in the 1920s and ‘30s, the city’s nightscape was legendary for its progressive, perhaps even subversive attitude. Today there’s no where in the world that can compete with Berlin when it comes to the sheer diversity of its nightlife. Berliners genuinely regard their home as the hippest in the world, which means you can find everything from pubs housed in derelict ruins to funky beach bars.... Diversity is the name of the game here!

More Info

It’s also knocking on Amsterdam's door for the title of ‘most liberal city in Europe’ - so as well as the standard rock, alternative and techno clubs, expect to find all kinds of naughty fetish and swinging sex clubs – so best pack those handcuffs and whip!

Quasimodo

Located beneath the Quasimodo Cafe and Delphi Cinema, this much-loved jazz cellar is one of Berlin's oldest. You can always be sure of one thing at Quasimodo - hearing amazing music. In recent years, the joint's repertoire has expanded, and top-flight jazz is complemented by a good mix of blues, Latin and funk... Ok so not your typical AU night, however this is why you are here - so check it ou!

Berghain

The dangerously hip come here to see-and-be-seen. Installed in a renovated old power station, Berghain looks unassuming enough on the outside, but within you'll find an impressive venue packed with the beautiful people of Berlin sweating it out to hard techno and electro...

Reich und Sch'n

Rising from the ashes of Berlin's famous celebrity-haunt - the 90 Degrees Club - is Reich und Sch'n (Rich and Beautiful). The sound track spans soul classics, hip-hop favourites and house music, with DJs dropping vinyl in three different spaces....

Maria am Ostbahnhof

You really ought to try to catch some cabaret whilst visiting Berlin and this gaff has it with a contemporary twist Maria's is home to Berlin's electro avant-garde. The club houses two performance spaces, the smaller of which is called Josef. Lots of visual and multimedia musical acts appear, ranging from local to international performers.

Food + Drink

Berlin is a great city for dining out, with restaurants to suit every pocket. Those tummies on a budget (i guess most of you?) can always enjoy an Imbiss ("snack"). These are usually small huts with a few tables outside where you can stand and eat your Bratwurst in a bun. You should definitely sample a Currywurst - a Berlin tradition which involves a sliced smoked and boiled sausage smothered in thick curry flavoured ketchup... (good substitute for a kebab we think!).
