Fun things to do!

The Charles Bridge

Grand gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Malá Strana. Its construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357. It‘s said that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge. its a must see... and always popular with Czech artists, musicians… and souvenir vendors whose stands line both sides of the bridge year-round!

More Info

Outgoing tip: a great time of day to come to the bridge is at sunset when one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the fully lit Prague Castle against the evening sky!

'Piss' Sculpture

Cries of disbelief, laughter and raised cameras greet this saucy animatronics sculpture of two blokes relieving themselves in a puddle shaped like the Czech Republic. However, you can have even more fun... the microchip-controlled sculptures are writing out famous Prague literary quotations. Send an SMS to +420 724 370 770 and they'll pause mid-flow to spell out your message instead.

Prague Castle

In spite of the many wars and fires, the Prague Castle has grown into a unique architectural complex. Set up on the hill overlooking the city, there are some picture postcard views and the changing of the guard is always interesting (and funny!) to watch...

Old Royal Palace

This is one of the most remarkable buildings in Europe... Romanesque and Gothic stories were built on the remains of the first, ninth-century structure. Make sure you take a peek at the Majestic Vladislav Hal - incredible is an understatement.

Prague Dungeons

If, like us, you Google ‘Prague Dungeons’, in the name of research, tread carefully. The result may be scarier than you could imagine…

Dvor'k Museum

The most striking building in the drab neighbourhood south of Jecn is the Vila Amerika, a 1720s, French-style summer house designed by Kilian Dientzenhofer. It's one of the city's finest baroque buildings, and now houses a museum dedicated to the composer Anton'n Dvor'.

Franz Kafka Museum

This much-hyped exhibition on the life and work of Prague's most famous literary son opened here in 2005 after three years in Barcelona and three years in New York. Entitled 'City of K', it explores the intimate relationship between the writer and the city that shaped him through the use of original letters, photographs, quotations, period newspapers, publications, video and sound installations.

Old Town Square

The old town square and the surrounding quarter form the heart of the city of Prague. The square and surrounding streets are pedestrian zones, and during summertime it is filled with terraces from where your group can relax in the middle of many remarkable medieval buildings. Our tip is to spend a couple of hours people watching in one of the cafes while taking the absolute splendour of the beautiful surroundings.

Wenceslas Square

This famous large square originally functioned as a horse market but evolved into Prague's central boulevard lined with grand buildings. Due to its commercialisation in recent years, the area has become rich pickings for touts trying to attract tourists into the many clubs and lap dance bars. That said... most of the important historical events in Prague's recent history took place here, such as the declaration of the First Republic in 1918, the protests against the Soviet occupation in 1969 and the protest march in 1989 which led to the Velvet Revolution and the end of the Communist era.

St. Vitus Cathedral

In the centre of the Royal Palace is the St. Vitus Cathedral, the most recognised landmark in Prague. The first part was built by the Frenchman Mathieu d'Arras. After his death in 1352, Peter Parler took over for the next 47 years. In 1421, the Hussite wars stopped work on the cathedral, and it wasn't until 1872 that works resumed and finally in 1929 the cathedral was completed... Finally!

Golden Lane

A popular sight at the Prague Castle is the Golden Lane, a small picturesque street with colourful wooden houses. Legend will have you believe alchemists attempted to turn metal into gold here, but legend will also have you believe in fairies, giants, little green leprechauns and white winged horses with a twisty horn between their eyes. So you've been warned...

Prague Ghost Walk

Let's delve deep into the past of Prague - the spiritual centre of Europe. This walk rakes up the undead background of this medieval city when the spooky narrow alleyways were full of brave knights, fabulous alchemists and unspoken ghost stories. Strolling around the labyrinth of the creepiest alleys full of wonder you discover many famous places noted for their strange events. Let your guide tell you interesting stories and facts about Prague.

Shopping

In a refreshing change, your money will go relatively far here. You'll be relieved to learn that Czech Crowns are the currency, not the mighty Euro. The main Prague shopping area runs down Wenceslas Square, along Na Prikope and into Republic Square. Parizska meanwhile has luxury international boutique shops. The Old Town Square and Mala Strana have boutique shops & art galleries. Small shops in Prague open roughly 9:00am - 7:00pm Shopping centres and department stores stay open until 8.00pm or even later. All stores open Monday to Saturday. Larger shops and shopping centres open on Sundays too.

Myslbek Shopping Gallery

Myslbek Shopping Gallery is a two-level shopping mall featuring Next, Calvin Klein, Gant USA, H&M along with several sports and outdoor activity shops... you get the drift.

The Palladium

The Palladium Shopping Centre is a multi-level shopping mall featuring over 200 shops. Benetton, Este' Lauder, Lush, Marks & Spencer, Body Shop, Tommy Hilfiger Sports, H&M and many more make this the largest area for shopping in Prague.

Vltava River Cruises

Just like gargling with Jagermeister and snowboarding naked, seeing Prague from the river is a unique experience. The historical center with its famous monuments presents itself from a different perspective and unusual angles. You’ll go by several islands on the Vltava and find yourself on a stretch of the river that lets you see a part of the embankment that you wouldn’t normally visit. In an hour, you‘ll leave the bustling city behind and come out to some of Prague's quieter areas.

Beer Cellars

There's buried treasure beneath these cobbles! Rich, dark, golden brown 'liquid gold' is plentiful. You'll find it in a hundred or more dimly-lit cellars, guarded by some welcoming custodians. Although valuable, you?ll find it priced most reasonably. Dig deep!

Nightlife

Roxy Club Prague

The Roxy is a legendary venue situated right in the city centre - only few steps from Old Town Square. Thanks to architectural dispositions, atmosphere and historic spirit of the building, Prague possesses a legendary party place where people from all around the world meet every night. Visiting artists have included: Air, Asian Dub Foundation, Coldcut, Faithless, Franz Ferdinand, Layo & Bushwacka, Public Enemy, Royksopp, Sasha, Silicone Soul, Spooky, DJ Rush, TransGlobal Underground, The Wailers, Nick Warren and many more... check it for sure!

Cross Club Prague

Prague's independent underground music club is situated in the cellar and ground floor of old house in Holesovice - the former industrial district of Prague. There is anything similar nowhere on the planet Earth - Prague's Cross Club is full of various moving mechanisms, flashing & fading coloured lights and interior of whole club looks like a haunted technical museum or some weird science fiction movie... That's why we love it!

Cloud 9 Sky Bar & Lounge

Cloud 9 Sky Bar & Lounge is the 1st real sky bar in Prague. Come, see and taste it on the rooftop (9th floor) of the Hilton Prague Hotel. Stunning views over city of Prague, on the open roof terrace...

Darling Cabaret

And finally one for the boys (or maybe ladies - who knows...?) Darling Cabaret is the largest and probably best known strip cabaret club in the centre of Prague. At least 15 girls are usually in residence, offering striptease cabaret, lesbian shows, Thai fire shows and table dancing.

Food + Drink

Like a Philosophy M.A. and a Morrissey box set, Czech cuisine is quite heavy. Lots of meat (usually pork or beef) served with dumplings, potatoes or rice, in a sauce. The most famous Czech drink is beer (pivo). A half-litre glass is often hazardously cheaper than a Coke or cup of coffee. The Czech's are also famous for their liqueur... if you would like to taste an original Czech liqueur, order Becherovkam, it is a bitter-sweet, yellow herbal drink and can be served both as an aperitif and a liqueur or diluted with tonic.

Novomestsky Pivovar

If you seriously like your beer you will be in heaven in this testament to the amber nectar, which opened in 1993. The Czechs love their beer and here in this 340-seat restaurant they brew their own with some pretty impressive results. The food production is not bad at all either with a vast array of Czech specialities as well as various international comfort food dishes on the menu.

Restaurace U Supa

Yes, it is unashamedly geared towards tourists with hearty Czech dishes and photo menus, but Restaurace U Supa's location is superb just off the Old Town Square, the draught Budvar is excellent, the cooking is above par and they have wonderful large yellow lampshades festooned around the grand dining space. Highlights include the spicy traditional sausages to start and then the goulash with a generous amount of beef and dumplings.

Thrakia

An Outgoing fave! This budget basement Bulgarian restaurant is an excellent venue for an inexpensive meal in the city centre. Kebabs, homemade sausages, srmy (stuffed cabbage), moussaka, cold cucumber soup and Mevena skara (four types of meat roasted on a lava grate) are all good options on a limited but faultlessly functional menu. No credit cards.

Absinthe

'The Green Fairy' is horrible green liquid that does strange things to your eyes and head. Essentially, if you have one or two (and if you can get past the overwhelming urge to gag), your head will be a beautiful...if rather strange...place.

More Info

Top tip: drink it properly - dip in a spoonful of sugar, light the spoon and allow the sugar to drip into the glass to set the Absinthe alight. Stir... blow out the fire and down it in one... you should be able to feel it travel along the journey to your stomach like an electric eel!
