Val D'Isere
Iconic and challenging, but mostly excellent! Everyone should ski the world's most famous resort once in their lifetime, Val d'Isere, it offers a vast skiing panorama. The resort has it all; year-round snow, 90 lifts opening up seemingly endless terrain, and an abundance of charm and character. Must SkiThe Famous Face PisteAll advanced skiers want to 'bag' the famous Face piste, which drops more than a kilometre from the top of Bellevarde to the valley floor. Outgoing tip: do it early in the day when the snow is still groomed and fresh |

Skiing & Boarding300km of pistes and 10,000 hectares of off-piste - there's bound to be something to suit you here: Most of the skiing is above the tree line; so expect a spectacular alpine backdrop. The lift systems are modern and very efficient and the resort offers a great snow park with tables, hips, spines, handrails and a 200m half pipe. |
BeginnerVal D’Isere is primarily a resort for Intermediates and advanced level riders, but any nubies needn’t stress; as the resort does offer some good beginner areas. As well as the nursery slopes at the bottom of the village, the Solaise, Datcha and Madeleine lifts offer good areas for beginners.
More Info
The resort has a total of 16 green runs to get stuck into Apart from good village nursery slopes, (which are free, incidentally), Solaise is the gateway to some gentle ski slopes off the Madeleine, Datcha and Glacier lifts (though downloading by ski lift back to the valley floor is pretty essential to avoid tougher slopes lower down at the end of the day). Likewise at the top of Bellevarde, smart use of the lift system opens up a range of lovely long green pistes such as Borsat ,Verte, Mont Blanc, Grand Pre and Genepi, on which beginners can benefit from high altitude snow conditions, without feeling threatened by their environment (particularly as they can get back to the village on the Olympic gondola to Val centre or in the gondola that drops from la Folie Douce to La Daille). Top Tip: The steep runs back into town will seriously rattle any beginner or intermediate. Avoid them by catching a lift back down the mountain at the end of the day. Close |
IntermediateViewed in its entirety, Val d'Isère as part of the Espace Killy offers huge potential of big kilometer skiing for intermediates, with long ski runs, fast lifts and typically good snow conditions. There are not many other places where you can ski as much distance, if you want to. |
AdvancedVal d’Isère’s off-piste is rated as some of the best in the world amongst advanced skiers and snowboarders. Many of the red ski runs are black ski runs in disguise, and most of the classic ski descents, like the OK ski run and have challenging sections or become bigger challenges when skied at a faster pace. |
Freestyle & SnowboardingVal D’Isere is quite simply a perfect boarder’s playground. With limited drag lifts and endless off piste opportunities, you ‘ill find yourself exploring new terrain day after day. Boarders rave about Val d'Isère as there are very few drag lifts and vast areas of on and off-piste slopes to exploit. |
GlacierThe Grande Motte and Pissaillas Glaciers offer some of the best skiing in the Espace Killy region. Between altitudes of 3,000 and 3,456 metres, these are some of Europe’s highest glaciers opening to customers as early as September. This is as snow sure as it gets! |
Apres SkiThis is a great example of a resort in which Outgoing can apply insider knowledge and vast resort experience to deliver a tailor made après ski programme for your group – Val D’Isere (or “Val Desire” - as The Sun memorably described it in their expose of bed hopping chalet girls) is known for it’s notoriously boisterous nightlife – arguably the liveliest in the French alps (though Chamonix would doubtlessly disagree). A dozen or more destinations of dance, drink and darn good fun glow at night around the base of the church tower like Van Gogh’s corner café. The only trouble you’ll have here is getting up the next morning! Our Favourite Bars and Nightclubs:

Café FaceLocated next to the main road, the Cafe Face is also situated at the foot of the Face de Bellevarde, the famous face of the Winter Olympics in 1992. This bar is merry and cultural, the décor (pretty much like the local’s hairstyles) having not having changed since 1993, with live music most nights from 5. Happy hour starts at 4 and the prices rise 10 cents an hour throughout the night. This is a perfect end to a day and is full of locals and French skiers into the night. Dicks Tea BarDicks Tea Bar has come to be known as an institution in Val d’Isère. Originally opened in 1979 by Dick Yates Smith and has evolved over the years into the one of the biggest and best nightclubs in the French Alps. BananasBananas at the foot of the slopes and its infamous green Kamikazi drink is popular for the ‘ride hard, play hard’ young crowd…hey, that means you! SaloonSituated at the bottom of the beginners slopes and only 1 minute walk from the high street this bar is the best place to go both the end of a long day skiing and a fantastic location for a night out. There is free wireless internet available here too. The student-friendly bouncers and staff (i.e. they don’t care if you are nissed as a pewt, louder than a Motorhead sound check and can make a beer last an hour) make this place busy and loud right into the night. Billabong CaféIf you’re under 25 years old, enjoy hearing INXS’s greatest hits as you wolf down your steak sandwich, the Billabong is for you – popular with the hamburger-hungry from Hull to Helsinki! PacificAnyone for a toffee vodka? The Pacific has one of the liveliest spirits in Val. It is loved by locals and holidaymakers alike, and it has a happy hour on Stella beer rising 50cents an hour from 4 until 7. Located right at the bottom of the slopes, if you still have energy straight after skiing, this is where to get your night started. Bar L’AlexandraNext to the Post office this is run by an eccentric Kiwi called Phil who is known and loved by the seasonaires. The bar is fantastic for larger groups of people and well known for its high quality loud sound system and subsequent hearing problems of former employees… Close |
Bespoke Apres & Events |
DJ's & BandsOne of the things that we do really well is throw a party in the mountains (Snowbombing & Winter Break are Outgoing events). Talk to us about what your group is after... as we have the relationships and contacts with many major acts and agencies. So whether it is a live band, DJ or club night your group are after - we have no problem helping to arrange this as either an extra element to your holiday (resort and numbers dependant) or as a promotional night in your city. |
Valley RallyThe Valley Rally is no doubt a student ski institution, one of the best days of your tour and one of the funniest days on the slopes for your group. Outgoing has run countless of them over the years - so be prepared for lots of stupidity, debauchery and a range of ridiculous challenges at the checkpoints all around the mountain! Fancy dress essential... |
Meal on the MountainOne of the highlights of every group ski holiday, the ‘Meal on the Mountain’ it's one the best opportunities to get your whole group together for one HUGE party and a whole lot of ‘Fromage’... These vary from resort to resort as we take over a restaurant on the mountain or in the village for a typically French fondue, with a typically student attitude – table dance anyone? |
Group Race DayFor some universities racing is a very important aspect, while for others it is more about having a laugh... Whatever your motivations Outgoing can organise this for you... It will always be with run professionally with experienced staff (traditionally we do this in conjunction with the resort ski school).
