Must SkiCime de CaronFamed for the highest lift in the Trois Vall'es, this run rises to a whopping 3,200m. The lofty cable car is a magnet for expert and adventurous intermediate skiers. The bulk of the steep terrain can be found here. |

Must DoEurope's Largest Toboggan RunA few years ago the local authorities decided they wanted a nice long toboggan run. In fact they decided they wanted a really long one and kept on developing it until it ran to 6km (3.7 miles), the longest in Europe! |

Skiing & BoardingAlthough it is linked to the wider Trois Vallées area, the resort is surrounded by slopes where you will be hard pushed to exhaust the skiing possibilities. The terrain in the Belleville Valley (which roughly includes Val Thorens, Les Menuires and St Martin) is fantastic. Despite being north facing, the resort's altitude ensures it gets good sunshine with little over-shadowing it. |
BeginnerScattered around the resort are several gentle greens and, once these are mastered, beginners can easily start on the blues, many of which end up in the neighbouring resort of Les Menuires. The most suitable areas in 1850 are the top of Verdons or Jardin Alpin Gondolas. The area at the top of Verdons is extremely wide and gentle. |
IntermediateWith access to Trois Vallees, Val Thorens is a great choice of resort for intermediates. It offers such a variety of skiing & boarding, from the easier cruising runs to some which are more challenging but still within the scope of intermediates.
More Info
Adjacent to 1850 are the Loze and Chenus sectors which not only have great views but also some great runs. Above 1850 Les Pyramides and Grande Bosses are both blues which are easy cruising runs for emerging intermediates whilst Combe de Saulire and Creux are a little more challenging. Val Thorens also provides that next step of slightly more challenging intermediate slopes. There is a choice of some more difficult red runs which have wide, quiet pistes making them ideal for the more adventurous intermediate. Close |
AdvancedAs well as the wide cruising skiing there is some very challenging skiing for advanced skiers in Val Thorens itself, not to mention the Three Valleys. Les Couloirs de La Saulire is a challenging piste with a clean underwear-threatening incline of 62 degrees. It is only the large coulior that is the official piste and do not attempt to ski the ridge leading to it if it has been closed.

Here’s some Outgoing picks of the best pistes for those who really know what they’re doing. Jockey: this run also starts in Val Thorens at La Loze and ends in . The run is north facing through the trees. It and usually nice and quiet. La Chanrossa: this run drops down from the top of Chanrossa which is above Val Thorens 1650. It changes direction half way down. La M: this piste is at the summit of Verdons and is steep and varied. The snow can vary from mogul fields to ice so be warned. L'Epaule De La Vizelle: this run also starts at the summit of Verdons but unlike M is never groomed and so provides a greater degree of difficulty for the most advanced skier. Close |
Freestyle & SnowboardingHigh-mountain hangout and crossroads of the freestyle universe – this is how the Trois Vallees regards itself…and it isn’t an inaccurate description… |
GlacierGiven the high altitude of Val Thorens and the Glacier de Péclet the resort is often regarded as "snow sure". With the winter season lasting into early May and summer skiing on the glacier. The highest skiable peaks are Pointe du Bouchet (3220m) and Cime de Caron (3200m), where you can find one of the biggest cable cars in the world with its capacity of 150 passengers.

Many of its slopes face north and north-west, providing for good snow conditions. This means that the slopes are not as sunny, so the resort tends to attract a crowd more interested in skiing than "terracing." However, the resort itself faces south, so you can really enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine when you have finished for the day! Close |
Apres SkiThe highest resort in France is not the prettiest – but the nightlife will more than make up for it. With Outgoings’ attention to detail approach when it comes to the après ski element of your group holiday, you’re guaranteed to get the most from this resort of superlatives – from organized bar crawls with free shots to enjoying a sky high craik with Guinness in the highest Irish pub in the world; Val Thorens awaits! Our Favourite Bars and Nightclubs:

The Frog & Roastbeef‘The British Embassy’, basically! The highest pub in Europe is the home of ski bums, students and revelers who tuck into hearty pub tucker (nice price for workers) and has the best après ski in the known world. Dancing on the tables is an every night occurrence. Falling off tables is too. O'Connell's'Genuine' Irish bar, owned by a Frenchman, run by a Dane, and the staff are usually Swedish…great Guinness and they show all the soccer matches that count ( y’know, like Scunthorpe vs MK Dons) The Rhum BoxA little secret ( well it was until you read this!) hidden behind El Gringo's Tex Mex. Flavoured rums are the main stay, usually good music is played, popular with the French, but everyone is welcomed. Unless you’re the Italian who got Zinedine Zidane sent off in the last World Cup final. TangoBasically the bar of a Swedish Club Hotel. “Ski in… Dance Out”, the signs says (though “Ski in…pass out” would be more apt, given the amount of scary blue liquid downed here. Tuesday nights are ‘Boogie Nights’, a Scandinavian fandango of sexy Swedes dressed as porn queens. That’s Tuesday sorted then… The VikingDespite its name is not particularly popular with the Scandinavians, usually its more of a Brit and Dutch affair. It's a good bar, though, does dangerously excellent toffee vodka, available by the bottle, and also houses an internet café. Dicks Tea BarDirty, dingy and brilliant after the pubs have shut and is almost always the seasonnaires' late drinking destination of choice. MalaysiaPricey, even by French night club standards. It mainly attracts those dripping in designer labels rather than the spag bol they ate earlier. Hilarious for people watching and meeting ladies from Eastern Europe who always appear to be short of a drink… Close |
Bespoke Apres & Events |
DJ's & BandsOne of the things that we do really well is throw a party in the mountains (Snowbombing & Winter Break are Outgoing events). Talk to us about what your group is after... as we have the relationships and contacts with many major acts and agencies. So whether it is a live band, DJ or club night your group are after - we have no problem helping to arrange this as either an extra element to your holiday (resort and numbers dependant) or as a promotional night in your city. |
Valley RallyThe Valley Rally is no doubt a student ski institution, one of the best days of your tour and one of the funniest days on the slopes for your group. Outgoing has run countless of them over the years - so be prepared for lots of stupidity, debauchery and a range of ridiculous challenges at the checkpoints all around the mountain! Fancy dress essential... |
Meal on the MountainOne of the highlights of every group ski holiday, the ‘Meal on the Mountain’ it's one the best opportunities to get your whole group together for one HUGE party and a whole lot of ‘Fromage’... These vary from resort to resort as we take over a restaurant on the mountain or in the village for a typically French fondue, with a typically student attitude – table dance anyone? |
Group Race DayFor some universities racing is a very important aspect, while for others it is more about having a laugh... Whatever your motivations Outgoing can organise this for you... It will always be with run professionally with experienced staff (traditionally we do this in conjunction with the resort ski school).
