Grand DesignsThe Grand Place, with its ornate baroque and gothic guild houses, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Built as a merchants market in the 13th century, it serves as the city centre, and a great place to enjoy Belgian hospitality at one of the many terrace cafes. It is also a venue for many concerts & events throughout the year and during the warmer months has a vibrant, daily flower market. |

Atomium in Heysel ParkSpace-aged monument built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by Andre Waterkeyn, it is 102-metres (335 ft) tall, with nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Escalators connect the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces... The top sphere provides a amazing panoramic view of Brussels. |

MIM (Museum of Musical Instruments)The MIM is a strikingly beautiful building in Brussels combining the architectural styles of Neo-Classic and Art Nouveau. Housed in the museum is a collection of more than 7000 instruments of varying kinds and origins. On the top floor, the indoor & outdoor MIM Restaurant provides visitors with a whopping 360 degree view of Brussels. |

Walk Tall in Mini EuropeThis mini village houses over 300 doll-sized versions of the most famous European monuments including the Eiffel Tower and Acropolis. Also found in Bruparck are an assortment of themed restaurants, and IMEX movie theatre (IMAX in English) and Oceade, a tropically heated water park. |

The Belgian Center for Comic Strip ArtHoused in an art nouveau masterpiece designed by Victor Horta, this museum pays homage to a particular Belgian passion; cartooning. Tin Tin and the Smurfs are the most famous Belgian comic strip characters but the museum also displays artwork from over 670 cartoonists. Other displays detail the stages of putting together a comic strip, from examples of initial ideas and pencil sketches through to final publication. Arranged over three levels, the museum also has a library and an art nouveau brewery... (we like it even more now!) |

Cathedral of Saints Michel and GuduleBuilt on the top of a hill, this dramatic place of worship reflects the three stages of the gothic style in its construction. It's a remarkable building because of the remnants of the old Roman collegiate church, its 16th century stained-glass windows, the statues of the apostles in the nave, the baroque style "chair of truth", its treasure and its impressive large organ. (No student citybreak is complete without one...) |

The Royal Palace (Palais Royal)The official home of the Belgian King - you'll always know if he is in the country when you see the Belgian flag flying on top of the building (and the TV will be on, of course). The building is a highlight of Neo-Classical architecture and overlooks Brussels Park. The Royal Palace is open to everyone during the summer months. |

Mont Des ArtsSituated half way between the broad avenues of Brussels Park and the pretty gardens of Petit Sablon and Egmont, this area marks the transition between the 'upper' and 'lower' town. It boasts an endless array of museums, theatres and historical monuments and is always packed with locals and tourists, who together create a feeling of a city in full throe. |

The complex itself consists of 16 huge interconnected greenhouses, a dining hall, theatre and reception areas. NATOA visit to NATO HQ normally takes approximately three hours and consists of two parts. First, a general introduction to NATO and information about current political issues is held by a representative from NATO International Staff. The briefing is followed by a meeting with a representative from the British Delegation, who will inform about the UK's work in NATO. If your group has a particular interest in a topic you are welcome to make a request for the briefings to also cover this subject. |

European Law CourtsMost important building in Brussels, and a notable landmark – this imposing building was built between 1866 and 1883 in the eclectic style by architect Joseph Poelaert. Adolf Hitler just loved the look of this place and in collaboration with his in-house architect, Albert Speer, based several of the monumental buildings of the Nazi era on the design of the court. Just think behind these doors, handsomley paid lawyers arewaging war on threats to our existence; bendy bananas and crooked cucumbers! |
NightlifeYou may be surprised to learn that Brussels is one of Europe’s most happening clubbing cities anywhere in the world.... That said it’s not all dance floor action, there are so many underground bars and bier cellars to choose from too. |
Our Favourite Bars & Clubs |
Place St GeryThe hub of the cities nightlife. More bars, clubs and after-dark activity than you'll ever need in a weekend. After sundown, this area of the city buzzes like a hungry mosquito. |
Le Pain Quotidien(Rue des Sablones 11) on the grand sablon is an Outgoing favourite. We enjoy the homemade tasty quiche and fresher than a student in September salad there. The sandwiches are faultless too. Great for those on a budget. |
FrietkotsVist the legendary Friekots where they serve Belgium fries and mayonnaise for hungry nightowls on the way home from one of the many bars and clubs. |
Food & DrinkBrussels is regarded as one of the most cosmopolitan of all European cities, and so its restaurants serve both Belgian and world cuisine. The most typical things to try though are mussels, fries (necessarily with mayonnaise) and traditional Belgian chocolate. Even if you're on a budget it's recommendable to save some money for at least one proper feast in a fine restaurant, for the Brussels' haute cuisine is an experience that can't be missed... so make your parents jealous and proud. |
Beer!Belgium is the home of beer with over 100 breweries and over 500 different beers. Although there are some excellent lager beers such as Stella-Artois, it is the specialty beers for which Belgium is famous. Where else but Belgium could you try raspberry beer? Belgian beer is usually served in a glass produced specifically for that particular type of beer, with some really extravagant designs. |
